Website design vs copywriting

One of these things is not like the other...but they are both important. Whether you're building a website or already have one, it is prudent to understand the roles of both a copywriter and a website designer.

A copywriter implements marketing techniques, SEO best practices, strategic wording, and research to lead your audience on a journey towards a solution (they may or may not have known) they need or desire.

A website designer creates the space for the copywriter to implement said strategies and optimizes the platform even further for SEO, usability, speed, e-commerce, mobile, and so on.

If your website designer did not consult with a copywriter, there may be lost potential to increase your sales, leads, and return customers.

Why it's important to use a copywriter

While many website designers understand copywriting basics, let’s face it, they don’t spend endless hours nerding out on copywriting and marketing strategies.

Other than the obvious knowledge of grammar and punctuation, professional copywriters are experienced and educated in marketing strategies, funneling techniques, writing strategies, how to use keywords to increase your ability to show up on a search engine (SEO), psychology of a buyer, and more.

Marketing is always changing, and the best copywriters spend much of their time on continual education, staying up to date with trends, analytics, and best SEO practices.

Ask your design team how they plan to create copy for your website. If the answer isn't, "we have a copywriter on staff" or "we will consult with a freelance copywriter", don't fret, just keep reading...

3 ways to make sure your website is optimized for its fullest marketing potential

1. Hire a freelance copywriter first, then take what they created to your designer who will likely charge you a prorated amount. If you haven't gone down the research rabbit hole to find the perfect website designer, that's okay! Copywriters often have designers in their back pocket to refer you to.

2. Show your already made website to a freelance copywriter for an audit. They can rewrite already created copy to enhance your buyer’s journey, increase SEO, leads, and return customers.

3. When hiring a design firm, ask how they can partner with a copywriter to create the perfect site for your business.
